More about Sadhana Forest

Sadhana Forest is a vegan grassroots volunteering organization. It aims to restore degraded lands through water conservation, reforestation, ecosystem regeneration and conscious, sustainable plant-based living.

Sadhana Forest was founded in 2003 in Auroville, south India, with as its goal to bring back the indigenous 'Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest' to 70 acres of severely eroded and barren land. In 2008 Sadhana Forest started hosting weekly Eco Film Clubs, where it invites dozens of visitors for a tour of the forest, a documentary and a free vegan meal. In Sadhana Forest started the 'Gaushala' a sanctuary for rescued and abandoned cows. In 2019 Sadhana Forest opened a vegan tea hut, where it offers vegan coconut chai and sweets to visitors and the neighboring community, free of charge. In 2023 we hosted the first edition of the Vegan Forest Festival, a free vegan camping festival.

In 2010 Sadhana Forest opened a center in Anse-à-Pitres, southeast Haiti. In 2014, it started a center in Samburu County, northern Kenya. In 2020 it started working in Meghalaya, northeast India. In these centers Sadhana Forest works with disadvantaged rural communities in remote, barren areas that are suffering the brunt of climate change, ecological degradation and malnutrition. We focus on planting indigenous, drought-resistant, food-bearing trees and water conservation together with the local community. We provide training in cost-effective and locally appropriate tree planting and water shed management techniques. Through this, we aim to provide long-term plant-based water & food security and create climate resilience for climate vulnerable communities.

Sadhana Forest hosts more than 1,000 volunteers per year and welcomes thousands of visitors yearly, introducing them to our work and vegan way of life, and offers all of them delicious wholefood plant-based meals. The Sadhana Forest staff is entirely vegan. The Sadhana Forest centers are fully vegan, substance-free, off-grid, do not use any processed food, harmful chemicals, have dry compost toilets and are built using natural or recycled materials.

Volunteers are welcome to help us in our effort of ecological restoration and sustainable zero waste living. Volunteering tasks include tree planting and tree care, taking care of our animals, cooking and various maintenance tasks around the community. In return Sadhana Forest offers food and accommodation to the volunteers.
