What was the motivation behind your project? What did you want to change in the world?

Living in Sydney, Australia, like many young families we get so much pleasure out of visiting our incredible beaches and oceans. I was shocked to hear the statistic that by 2050 our oceans are likely to contain more plastic than fish (MacArthur Foundation) - that wasn't a world I wanted to leave for my daughter. Instead, I wanted to do my bit to help, by creating a swim line that would not only inspire the next generation of little ocean warriors but help preserve our beautiful oceans for them to enjoy. By making our swimwear out of recycled plastic bottles, we hope to divert 1 million plastic bottles from the ocean by 2025.

Who is the team behind your project?

Little Fishy Swim is run by Bondi Beach-based mum-of-one, Jess, with occasional 'help' from her 2-year-old daughter Lila. But everyone who buys from us becomes part of our mission too. Like we always say, individually we may be one drop, but together we can save an ocean.

What one thing about your project would most surprise us?

People sometimes assume recycled fabric will be thinner or lesser quality than 'virgin' materials - but I've found the opposite. One of the most common bits of feedback from our customers is the quality, softness and durability of our material, plus our fibre is OEKO-Tex certified and our swimsuits UPF50+ rated for sun protection. I too assumed I might have to compromise to maintain our eco-credentials, but that hasn't been the case at all. Now I wonder why anyone buys regular polyester?

If your project could be granted one wish, what would you wish for?

Ban the plastic bag! If there's one thing worse for the ocean than plastic bottles, it's plastic bags! Turtles and dolphins mistake them for jellies and choke on them, they snag on coral and cause all sorts of other sorts of mayhem. In countries where they've introduced a charge for taking fresh bags in the supermarket, their use has fallen dramatically - but there's really no need for them at all. We should all use re-usable fabric totes instead.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us about your project?

We're always working through how we can make our project even more 'ocean-friendly'. Already, we donate $1 per purchase to an incredible ocean clean up charity here in Australia and have tried to use recycled and biodegradable materials only for our packaging and shipping. Keep an eye on our website and Instagram as we've got lots of new ocean-friendly products in the works, which will help us remove even more plastic bottles from our ocean ecosystem.
